Well, turns out she wasn't so mean to us. Our house on Shark River in Neptune City, NJ, somehow managed to keep power while most surrounding towns are dark and flooded. We did encounter a boat in our yard this morning (I'm thinking finders-keepers mentality) and we've lost some of our dock. All in all I'd say we're very fortunate. My thoughts are with those who got the worst of the hurricane...never taunt or disrespect mother nature! And to avoid total boredom we have resorted to heavy drinking and playing dress up, resulting in me looking like a drunk from the 60's. More photos later.

Between my birthday, the move back to the Asbury Park area and our show Friday in Philly, I am pooped, sore, bruised, beat, my liver literally hurts and I have an insane amount of photos to upload. For now the blood tear cake and the feeling switch express my current state spot on.

Some thoughts this week...

1. Quit the emotional bitching on facebook. Get a blog. Or some tissues.

2. There is a thin line between being skinny and looking like fragile grandmothers. Nothing ages you quite like the slow starvation process.

3. Can we all take a minute and bask in the amazing moment when you thought someone was too cool for you, but then you realize they are just a giant pussy? Almost feels like sun.

I revisit this area and I can feel the darkness coming up around me.
I claw the walls in an attempt to avoid drowning.

A lot of good can come upon you, but the great things you have to reach out and grab. You have to work for them until you deserve each opportunity you get. Envision what you want and make it yours. Keep your thoughts positive and productive and dreams begin to fulfill themselves. This seems wildly optimistic in a world where people are more comfortable expressing their emotions through a telephone than in the flesh. This seems wildly optimistic in a world where you can piss your life away doing nothing and it's a success if the bills are paid on time.

Don't be your own black hole. These ideas are not impossible. They are real. This is your life. Every second that passes is gone for good. Laziness is the opiate of the masses! Society has built such a brilliant trap. Everyone is dizzy and drunk off the idea that it's impossible to do what they love. A haze is over their eyes so thick that they can only see as far as their next fuck. It's all a fucking scheme. The food loses flavor, the radio dies, and no one even notices because they're too busy working a job they hate. Stress controls them. Fear moves them. They stay in the town where they were born because leaving seems an impossibility. They keep thinking tomorrow will be better as they sit on their asses and watch them expand. Tomorrow isn't going to be better on its own, it's just going to be.

Shit happens. Sure, shit happens, but the smart people come up with solutions for the shit. A bridge to span the fecal matter that gets laid at your feet. Dirty your fucking boots up, otherwise don't bother putting them on.

If you're sitting in the dark, waiting for the lights to come on, count me out.
I'm busy building a new world.

Watermelon Salad

Just writing about this is making me drool. The watermelon, basil and feta combo is so on point.
Perfect for when you drag your sunburned and sandy self back home, half-buzzed and fully-hungry.

Watermelon Salad with Feta, Olives, and Basil

6 cups watermelon, cut into cubes (roughly half a small watermelon)
1 1/2 cups Greek feta, rough chopped
1 cup Kalamata olives, pitted and halved
1/4 cup basil leaves, cut chiffonade (tiny thin ribbons)
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar

Cut and prepare the ingredients for the salad. To mix the vinaigrette, whisk the balsamic into the olive oil until emulsified. 20 – 30 minutes before serving, toss the ingredients together and lightly dress the salad. Serve garnished with basil leaves.

we lost an amazing friend, brother, son, and shredder this week. wildly tragic and hard to handle are understatements. few days of an irish funeral did not even take the edge off. i wanted to post a few photos of ryan to look back on. and this ridiculous video i recorded last summer. there is something so profound and haunting about pictures of the ones you have loved and lost...like they are looking back and now know something you do not. or they have found some kind of peace in a secret.

he was such a beautiful soul. wild to the bone. he could exist for months with a dollar in his pocket. he made friends everywhere he went. his energy was completely contagious. he was the type of person who really lived their life...fully. i mean hop a train across country with no money and find your way type of human. always had a guitar, skateboard and a book of tao-te ching on him. after he passed i read a passage he highlighted in that book..."we gain by losing, lose by gaining." i am trying to keep that in the front of my mind right now to stop the hurt.

so many good stories of his that i wrote down....doing drugs with fake celebrities in hollywood, train hop traveling, banjo-etiquette...he knew so much. one of the last times i saw him i was in a bad mood. i don't know if he could sense it, or if he was just being a sweetheart, but he hugged me and told me how much he liked my hair. "i love that you just let it do its thing! no one lets anything do its things anymore!" you were so right ryan.

one of our friends wrote this about him and it is dead on:

Stole this recipe from the Because I'm Addicted blog. I've been on a severe watermelon kick this summer - always have one cut up in the fridge. Plus I usually have a bottle of vodka or ten in the freezer. This cocktail is perfect for switching it up between shitty bbq beer and whiskey benders. It's summer, after all.

The Watermelon Picnic Cocktail

You will need:
2 Parts Kanon Vodka
2 Parts Watermelon Chunks
2 Parts Lemon Lime Soda
1/2 Part Lemon Juice
1/2 part Simple Syrup (easy recipe here)

1. Chop watermelon and muddle in a mixing tin along with lemon juice and simple syrup, add Kanon, shake it like a polaroid picture.

2. Strain into a glass over ice, top with lemon lime soda, garnish with a slice of watermelon. Enjoy!

the new antlers album, "burst apart," is streaming on npr. trippy night sounds. this album leans more in the direction of radiohead style ambiance. seems like the album is roughly based off of the first song "i don't want love." an acceptance of darkness. there is an eeriness to it but it is uplifting. low-fi that you can sway your shoulders to. "no widows" is my bedfellow this eve. thanks to the ever internet savy kristin d for putting the word out. go listen here.

bought a few books on palmistry and tarot card reading. can't wait to push my gypsy resume to the local psychic shops and astrology boutiques. i would be so content looking at hands and rubbing crystals for a living. some of the info in the palmistry book came in handy today in court. crazy how much you can tell about someone just by looking at their hand and finger shape. so thank you to the understanding woman with oblong water hands. you rule.

we had a bitching time this weekend - one show at the lanes in asbury park, and the other at the note in west chester. drunkenly sat on a johnny's momma's homemade rum cake and lost my last set of back up keys (and probably some of my dignity). learned that most people really are trying to rip you off if you play at their bar. and hey, just because we enjoy playing does not mean it is for free. if i wanted to get screwed for money all night i would be a hooker.

my buddy kris shot some late night/early morning photos for us over at his studio/warehouse/apartment. dogs and wine and sushi and twigs and trees and other trees and magic. we kind of look like a black metal band in the final shots but i am kind of really into it.

leaving for cali on wednesday and i have yet to pack. wondering how i am getting to work tomorrow without a car. too many highways to ride my bike down. also wondering how long my car will be stagnant in the oh seis parking lot (front yard). i envision some homeless man in asbury scratching his ass with my last spare key.

some new additions this week. really excited about the japanese pressing of deep purple live. if you're a vinyl geek like myself, check out holdfast in asbury park on cookman ave. loads of cherry picked records that cost just a tad more than what you'd find em for thrifting (i spent $15 total on the finds above). there's a russo music store underneath and some racks of second hand gems...i found a super old murder city devils crop top for 5 bucks. we played a show here a few months back hope to get back in there soon. everyone there rules. seriously.

4am and i am not close to tired yet...mixing at the studio has me too giddy for sleep. we should have our ep mixed this week and mastered soon after. so happy with the sound...very 60s, lots of drone and delay and distorted, fuzzy guitar. can't wait to hear some mixes again before our show tomorrow night.

we are trying to figure out what artwork to use and how to go about creating cd jackets. i want it to be as handmade as possible...kind of the same approach we take with our custom screened merch. right now it's looking like pressing photos and screening the back. every band effort has been a midnight basement project thus far...so dirty hands, here we come.

these are the cover ideas we are working with, all shot by owen on his diana camera. i'm feeling the first photo....the color and random aura around riker are great. he wore this insane costume to a halloween party/show we played...handmade mask and wings from dog and deer bones he found in the woods. the wings were about 3-4 feet long, which made for shotty drunken house navigation, but amazingly creepy photos.
